The new Clyde railhead opened in 1980 for the construction of the hydroelectric Clyde Dam. The Railhead was heavily used initially. However, it was reduced to handling only wagon lot goods from March 1984. The dam was completed in 1993, flooding the old Cromwell Township and creating Lake Dunstan.
